The holidays arrive with expectations of joy, togetherness, and celebration.
For many people, the season also brings a quiet ache. A chair left empty. A tradition that no longer feels the same. A version of life that has changed.
Loss doesn’t take a holiday. And pretending it does often deepens the pain.
Rather than asking ourselves to “power through” or “stay positive,” what if we approached the season with a different intention to integrate loss into the holidays instead of fighting against it?
Grief is not a problem to solve. It’s a reflection of love, meaning, and connection. When we make space for it, we create room for authenticity and gentleness with ourselves and others.
Traditions
One of the greatest sources of suffering during this time of year is the belief that traditions must remain unchanged. It’s okay if the tree goes up later. It’s okay if gatherings feel different or smaller. It’s okay if joy and sadness sit side by side.
Give yourself permission to adapt. Traditions can be honored without being repeated exactly as they once were. Create new ones.
Create Rituals That Acknowledge Loss
Rather than avoiding the pain, consider gentle ways to acknowledge it:
- Light a candle in honor of someone or something you miss
- Set aside a moment of quiet reflection
- Share a memory and invite others to share a story when it feels right
Rituals don’t fix grief, they give it a place to land.
Speak Your Needs Out Loud
You are not required to meet anyone else’s expectations this season. Let others know what you can and cannot do. Practice saying:
- “This year looks different for me.”
- “I may need to step away.”
- “I’m taking this one moment at a time.”
Clear communication is an act of self-respect, not selfishness.
Small, intentional acts of care create steadiness in uncertain moments.
✨ A Gentle Reminder
Integrating loss into the holidays doesn’t mean the season is ruined. It means it’s real.
There is no right way to grieve. There is only your way and it deserves compassion.
If this season has stirred emotions you weren’t expecting, you likely have some unresolved grief that is asking to be processed.
On January 18th, I’ll be leading an 8-week Grief Recovery Method® group, designed to gently guide you through the action steps needed to process unresolved grief and loss.
It is a supportive, structured, and confidential space.
This evidence-based program offers practical tools to help you move beyond pain and toward emotional completion.
If you’re ready to begin the new year with intention, healing, and support, I invite you to join us and you can find more details here.
