How much energy do we spend carrying the past?

Old hurts. Old disappointments. Old regrets.

What would happen if that energy became available for today?

When I ask people if they’re grieving, most quickly answer, “No.”

Yet as we continue talking, they tell me about a divorce that still hurts, a career they never recovered from losing, a parent they couldn’t please, a friendship that ended without closure, a dream that quietly slipped away, or the loss of the life they thought they would have.

Most don’t think of these experiences as grief.

Grief is the normal and natural emotional response to loss. And loss comes in many forms throughout our lives.

The challenge isn’t that we’ve experienced loss. It’s that most of us were never taught what to do with the emotions that follow.

Instead, we learned messages like:

  • Stay busy.
  • Be strong.
  • Don’t feel bad.
  • Time heals all wounds.

These ideas are well-intentioned, but they often leave our emotional pain unaddressed. Rather than completing our relationship with the loss, we simply learn to live around it.

Over time, unresolved emotions can quietly shape the way we move through life.

Perhaps you find it difficult to trust people after being hurt.

Maybe you keep everyone at arm’s length because vulnerability feels risky.

Perhaps you’re always striving to prove your worth because of criticism you experienced years ago.

Or maybe you’ve become so accustomed to staying busy that being still feels uncomfortable.

These aren’t character flaws. They’re often protective patterns that developed after painful experiences we never had the tools to process.

Many people don’t realize they’re carrying yesterday into today.

Until they begin doing the work.

One of the most meaningful moments I witness is when someone recognizes that a belief they’ve carried for years isn’t simply “who they are.” It’s a response to something that happened. And because it was learned, it can be released.

When emotional energy is no longer tied up in unfinished pain, something remarkable happens.

People become more present.

They reconnect with joy.

Their relationships deepen.

They make decisions with greater clarity instead of reacting from old wounds.

They begin responding to life rather than reliving the past.

This isn’t about forgetting what happened or pretending it didn’t matter.

It’s about completing what was left emotionally unfinished so that your past no longer dictates your present.

So today, I’d invite you to ask yourself one simple question:

What part of my past might still be asking for my attention? Not so I stay there, but so I can become more fully present here?

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves isn’t learning another productivity strategy.

It’s freeing the energy we’ve unknowingly been using to carry what was never meant to be carried forever.

If you’re recognizing that you may be carrying losses you never fully addressed, you’re not alone. Most of us were never taught how to recover from life’s losses, we were simply taught to keep going.
